Sending a holiday card is still a great way to show far away friends and family that you’re thinking about them around Eid. Eid Mubarak is a traditional Muslim greeting reserved for use on the festivals of Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr. The phrase translates into English as “blessed festival”, and can be paraphrased as “may you enjoy a blessed festival”. Muslims wish each other Eid Mubarak after performing the Eid prayer. This celebration continues until the end of the day for Eid ul-Fitr and continues a further three days for Eid ul-Adha. However, in the social sense people usually celebrate that is the Ul-Fitr in the same length as Ul-Adha, such as family visits, and exchange greetings, such as “Eid Mubarak”. It is notable that saying these exact words is a cultural tradition influenced by deep roots of religion; however, it is not part of any religious obligations. Speakers of Arabic might also add “kul ‘am wantum bikhair.” Which means “[May] you be well every year”

Eid refers to the occasion itself, and Mubarak means ‘Blessed’.

The rules for halal food aren’t only applicable to meat. Yes, animals should be slaughtered correctly, and pig meat should be avoided. However, harder to avoid are the animal byproducts present in everything from shampoo to sweets… Like vegetarians, individual Muslims will be more or less prone to actually check the label of processed foods. Or, as a friend said, what you don’t know, won’t hurt you.

Still, as I started out saying: that’s all well and good during the year. During Ramadan and Eid ul Fitr it’s different. It’s a time of spiritual cleansing after all.

It’s always a good idea to have a book explaining a holiday to children, this is true especially for Eid Ul Fitr and Ramadan in a Western context, where only a portion of a child’s surroundings will be celebrating. These books were written for (in one case even by) children and therefore stick to the essentials. But then, who really needs more?

Let me start with the book that is illustrated above: Ramadhan and Eid-ul-Fitr by Azra Jessa who wrote and illustrated this book at age 12! The book was written by her to share with her classmates what it is like to celebrate Eid in her family, and to help them understand Ramadan. The result is very suitable for kids aged 4 through 8.

Fasting and Dates: A Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr Story is a more conventional children’s book: part of a series about religious holidays. The illustrations are cute, if a bit Caucasian given the topic. Recomended on Amazon by a teacher for 1st and 2nd grade kids (age 6, 7).

The following two books don’t have reviews on Amazon, but have the distinct advantage of using photographs of real people to illustrate the holiday.

Muslim jewelry for men can be a silver ring – sanctioned by the Quran – or a caligraphy pendant for instance. I’ve found you some great examples to get started.

Is jewelry allowed for men during Ramadan?

There is no special rule about jewelry during Ramadan. However many people are more observant of Islamic rules during Ramadan, because it’s a time for prayer and contemplation.

For men the main rule is that gold is haram, as it is seen as a metal for women in the Quran. Different traditions within Islam are more or less strict about jewelry for men, but since Muhammad himself wore a seal ring, there’s a general consensus that a seal ring is definitely halal.

Adding the two rules up, what you get is that Muslim men can wear silver rings.
